On stage, the three musicians Ana Kravanja, Samo Kutin and Iztok Koren move elegantly between more than 20 instruments – many of them home-made – and create hypnotic compositions that slowly unfold like dreams that you can sink into. Širom’s sound evokes associations with Slovenian folk music, Far Eastern music and African music forms, and sounds cosmic and minimalist at the same time. With their latest and fifth album on the iconic Glitterbeat Records, Širom takes another bold step into a musical universe where traditional notions of folk music dissolve and are reborn in new, unexpected forms.

Undercurrent

Undercurrent is the musical expression of CRRNT Collective – a band consisting of the members of CRRNT Collective. At Undercurrent, different musical roots intertwine and create a living, changing sound space. Here, free jazz, improvisation, lyrical narratives and experimental textures meet in a common language that grows directly out of the group’s deep dedication to collective creation. The ensemble’s seven musicians each bring their own cultural heritage and musical visions into the space and each concert is an open work – an opportunity to explore new forms, listen to each other’s ideas and create something that can only arise in the present. The Wire has called Rezaei “one of the most technically skilled and creatively fearless artists using turntables as an instrument”. Using a digital vinyl system, she shapes an almost endless catalogue of samples in real time and creates an expression that feels both raw, playful and futuristic. In addition to classic turntablist techniques such as scratches and beat-juggles, she has developed her own, where she controls sine oscillations via the pitch slider. This is turntablism as composition. Mariam Rezaei has collaborated with, among others, The Sleep of Reason Produces Monsters with Mette Rasmussen, Turntable Trio with Evicshen and Maria Chávez, Pat Thomas, Valentina Magaletti, Okkyung Lee and many more. Her latest solo release “FRACTURED” was praised by, among others, Bandcamp Daily and The Quietus.

CRRNT Collective invites you to an evening at ALICE, where improvisation, avant-folk, and fearless turntablism meet across borders.
